It was a cold January night in Berkshire, England. At Bray Film Studios, Eric Clapton sat down with an acoustic guitar, a small ensemble, and no amplifiers. What followed over the next ninety minutes became the most emotionally raw and commercially successful concert recording of his career.
The MTV Unplugged series had already hosted major artists, but Clapton's session was different. He arrived with a setlist drawn almost entirely from the blues tradition — the music he had grown up with, the music that had made him. The decision to strip back the sound proved transformative.
Among the sixteen songs performed that night was Tears in Heaven — a deeply personal piece written in the aftermath of the tragic death of his four-year-old son, Conor. Clapton had been reluctant to perform it publicly. The MTV stage changed that. The song's quiet devastation moved the audience to silence.
The recording went on to sell over 26 million copies worldwide. It won six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. Layla — rearranged as a gentle, heartbreaking acoustic ballad — won Record and Song of the Year. It remains one of the best-selling live albums ever recorded.
